Frierson family ephemera, 1931-1968.

Twelve clippings and printed items (1931-1968), and four scans of photographs (ca. 1940s-1961), re the Frierson family of South Carolina, including Presbyterian minister William Crosland Frierson and his son John. Materials reflecting the interests of the Rev. William C. Frierson, who at various times served congregations in Westminster (Oconee County, S.C.) and Denmark (Bamberg County, S.C.) and elsewhere, include printed text of a sermon, "Peace and Goodwill," preached for the 1943 Christmas season, during World War II; clippings documenting his interest in the promotion and protection of the native American holly (Ilex opaca), and his 14-acre nursery located west of Denmark, S.C., which cultivated holly, azalea and camellia shrubs; two clippings, [ca. 1950?] re John Frierson's botanical research with grafting shrubs and his discovery of survival of a rare grape fern plant undocumented in S.C. for 70 years. Scanned images depict John Frierson in uniform, 1949, while enrolled at Clemson University; undated image [ca. 1950s?] of Frierson in uniform on tarmac at an airport with an officer, Barnie B. McEntire, Jr. (d.1961), a Brigadier General and the first commander of the South Carolina Air National Guard; image of John L. Frierson and Robert V. Frierson, both in uniform, flanking their father, Dr. W.C. Frierson, 1955; and image of large family gathering, "Dr. and Mrs. W[illia]m C. Frierson, children & grandchildren," 1961.
